01 — THE SAUNA | PREPARE

The sauna begins the sequence. Whole-body heat raises skin and core temperature, increases blood flow, promotes perspiration, and allows muscles and connective tissues to warm and relax. Heart rate and circulation increase as the body responds to the thermal environment—creating a powerful transition from the demands of the day into intentional recovery.

The body is warm. Circulation is elevated. The sequence has begun.

02 — THE COLD PLUNGE | ACTIVATE

Cold immersion creates the contrast. The rapid shift from heat to cold triggers an immediate thermoregulatory response: peripheral blood vessels constrict, sympathetic nervous-system activity increases, and catecholamines such as norepinephrine rise.

The cold isn't simply the opposite of the heat. The transition between the two is the experience. Heat and cold challenge the body's circulatory and thermoregulatory systems in distinctly different ways, creating the defining contrast at the center of the sequence.

03 — THE HOT PLUNGE | RESTORE

Warmth returns—this time through water. Hot-water immersion surrounds the body with consistent conductive heat while the water itself provides buoyancy and hydrostatic pressure. After the intensity of cold exposure, the return to warmth creates a deliberate transition toward relaxation, comfort, and recovery.

Muscles relax. The intensity subsides. The body moves from challenge toward restoration.

04 — PHOTOBIOMODULATION | RECOVER

Photobiomodulation completes the sequence. Red and near-infrared light are delivered across the body, where specific wavelengths interact with cellular photoreceptors and can influence mitochondrial activity and cellular signaling associated with recovery and tissue function.

Unlike the thermal exposures that precede it, this final stage requires no additional physical stress. You simply rest beneath the light and allow the sequence to come to a close.
